What makes a “great” coach great?

This may sound like a bold statement but, we’re on a mission to make all coaches better, more well informed, effective, and efficient coaches. How’s that for an obnoxious and arrogant statement? While we are building software and systems aimed at achieving our goal, we thought we’d start interviewing some of the most well respected coaches around to learn about what helps them and hurts their progress as a coach in the box. We know that being a great coach isn’t easy and we truly believe that great coaches will help produce better, stronger and more healthy athletes.

We had the pleasure of catching up with Chuck Thompson (Coach Chuck T) from GSX CrossFit in Fort Worth, TX. In this video, Chuck explains what elements make up a great coach, the importance of athlete logs and then we discuss the need for more strict requirements on how folks actually become coaches. Chuck is very candid and watch out, his beard will getchya!

Coach Chuck Thompson is VP of Operations for Dollamur Mats, manufacturer of the mats you see throughout GSX. Chuck is also very passionate about proper nutrition and he focuses on following the Paleo diet. ”You can’t out work a poor diet and with today’s resources on the internet and in print there just isn’t a legitimate reason for a crappy diet.” The sport of fitness has become a family affair for Chuck as you will see Chuck’s wife Sara and their girls, Avery and Mia, around GSX in the afternoons and on most Saturdays. ”I believe anyone who joins GSX is taking a step to a healthier life style and I’ll do anything I can to help them achieve their goals.”
